How to Build Trust with Your Smile

Most of us know almost intuitively that a smile is more attractive than a frown, or that we’re more attracted to people who smile than to those who don’t. But what you may not realize is that a smile is actually a great way of building trust in other people. In fact, a recent study suggests that nearly 75% of people in this country are more likely to trust a smiling person than one who’s not. This simple fact can play a significant role in your life – whether you’re applying for a new job; trying to get a home mortgage loan; or asking someone out on a first date. Your smile can play a huge role in your life. Here, then, is how to make the most of your smile.

  • Make it genuine.
Without really understanding the particulars of why, most of us can tell whether a person is genuinely smiling or not. The indicators of a real smile are quite subtle, but ones that most of us instinctively recognize – corners of the mouth that are upturned and “laugh lines” around the eyes, for example. So make sure your smile is genuine. If you’re in a situation where that may be challenging, just think of something – or someone – who makes you smile. After all, you’re trying to build trust in another person, so shouldn’t your smile be the real thing?
  • Make it appropriate.
While smiling is nearly always better than frowning, wearing a smile all the time, or at times that are for whatever reason in appropriate, is probably worse than frowning or not smiling at all. This situation is easily remedied – simply be certain that your smile is genuine, and really pay attention to the situation and what the other person is saying. That way, you’ll just naturally be smiling only when it’s appropriate to do so.
  • Make it appealing.
Now that you know the potential power of your smile, it’s time to make the most of it. You can do this easily enough in the privacy of your home each and every day by following a good oral health regimen of brushing twice a day and flossing at least once a day. But there’s much more involved in good oral health. Remember to see your dentist for regular exams and cleanings. If your teeth are stained or damaged, ask your dentist for information about cosmetic dental procedures or whitening products.
