Why do Teeth Stain?

Although tooth enamel is very strong, it can crack, chip and discolor. Tooth enamel becomes stained either because of molecules contacting the outer surface or because of intrinsic factors happening inside the tooth structure. Your teeth can become yellow because of aging or certain health conditions. These intrinsic factors cause discoloration from the inside. Tooth stains are also caused by poor dental hygiene. Other sources of tooth discoloration include:

  • Wine
  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Soda
  • Tomato sauce and other acidic, deeply colored sauces
  • Berries and other deeply colored fruit

Certain foods and beverages have brightly colored molecules in them that cling to teeth, causing stains and discoloration. Good oral hygiene habits can go a long way in preventing teeth stains. By brushing and flossing, you remove the stain-causing food debris lingering on your teeth and in between your teeth.

Teeth whitening and porcelain veneers are two good options for whitening discolored teeth. Once your teeth are stained, it’s difficult to conceal the stains without one of these cosmetic dentistry treatments.
