Enamel is what protects the deeper layers of your teeth. It protects the softer layer of your teeth called dentin, and the nerves, blood vessels and dental pulp housed in the root canals of your teeth. Medical experts say enamel is the hardest substance in the human body, and its durability is what allows you to chew and bite. It’s very important to take care of your enamel with these dental hygiene and teeth cleaning tips:
- Don’t brush with too much force. Aggressive tooth brushing wears away your enamel over time. Slow down and don’t rush your brushing routine. You need only apply light, gentle pressure as you brush.
- Floss. Flossing once a day is essential to removing bacteria and debris in between your teeth that eats away at your tooth enamel.
- Avoid chewing ice and other hard substances. Your enamel is strong but it can break, especially when other hard substances are gnashed against it.
- Eat foods that are good for your enamel. Foods like vegetables, whole grains, and other calcium and nutrient-rich items that are good for your overall health are generally good for your teeth and enamel as well.
- Rinse after eating and drinking: When you eat and drink, bacteria in your mouth feast on the debris and produce cavity causing acid as a result. Rinse away enamel-eating bacteria by swishing your mouth out with water after eating and drinking.
