Why Metal Fillings are Replaced
Metal fillings are unsightly and can detract from the overall appearance of your smile, but this is not the only reason to consider replacing them. In fact, aesthetics are only one concern when it comes to metal fillings.
Metal fillings are packed into teeth, but do not actually seal a cavity. This can allow bacteria and food particles to get underneath the filling, resulting in problems such as additional tooth decay and tooth infection. Additionally, hot and cold foods and beverages can cause the amalgam in metal fillings to expand, cracking teeth or allowing fillings to fall out. Worse still, metal fillings contain mercury, a toxic substance that is considered safe when contained inside the filling but may still be something you prefer to avoid altogether.
By contrast, the fillings and inlays/onlays offered by Dr. Williams are made of nontoxic materials and bonded to the surface of the tooth. Our restorations do not expand with temperature fluctuations, allowing them to remain firmly sealed over the cavity and preventing both damage to the tooth and bacteria from seeping underneath. What’s more, the materials used for white fillings and inlays/onlays is shaded to match your teeth in color, allowing your teeth to be protected without the appearance of your smile being diminished.
